드디어 화요일(Tuesday)이 되었습니다.
따사로운 햇살이 잭에게 화요일이 되었음을 알려줍니다.
잭과 애니는 이 날만 손꼽아 기다리고 있었죠~!
잭은 번개같이 침대를 뛰어나와 가방을 챙기고 밖으로 나와 애니와 함께
매트하로 향합니다.
이번에도 모간은 매트하에 없군요. 자그만한 쪽지하나 덩그러니.. 놓여있습니다.
여러번 읽어본 쪽지...
이번에 경험하게 될 내용은 Something to learn 입니다.
잭과 애니는 이번에 무엇을 배우게 될까요?
잭이 동물과 친구가 되는 법을 배우게 될까요? ㅋㅋ
아니면 애니가 책보고 연구하는 자세를 배우게 될까요? ㅋㅋ
이번 책 역시 미국 초원지대로 갑니다. 하지만.. 이미 다녀온 아이들..
모간할머니께서 이들을 두번 같은곳에 보낼리는 없겠죠?
도착하자 마자 저 멀리 보이는 마차들..
스쿠너선처럼 생긴 마차들이 바쁘게 떠나지만 차마 걸음으로는 따라갈 수 없는 거리였죠.
아무것도 할 수 없을 것만 같은 두마리 토끼 중 애니가..
굴뚝 하나를 발견합니다.
거기엔 무엇이 있을까요?

덕아웃은 학교였네요. 이번 미션이 something to learn 이기 때문에
애니의 직감은 역시 .. 여기서 무언가를 얻는게 3번째 목표라고 확신합니다.
덕아웃 안에는 어려보이는 선생님과 작은 소년과 소녀 그리고 키가 큰 소년 3명이 학생이 있었습니다.
그리고 이제 막 첫 수업을 시작하려고 합니다. 책은 한권 뿐이고 매가피의 책인 반짝반짝 작은 별을 읽는 시간입니다.
선생님인 Neely는 책읽도록 잭부터 시키게 되고, 잭은 책읽는 것에 자신이 있기 때문에 쉽게 읽고 두번째로 Jeb에 책을 넘깁니다.
하지만 Jeb은 책을 읽지 못하네요. 아마 글을 모르나봅니다. 이것때문에 Jeb은 무시당했다고 생각해서 잭한테 은근히 시기 질투를 느끼게 되는데요.
과연 잭과 Jeb의 사이는 어떻게 진행될까요?

여튼 밖에 나갔다가 바람이 많이 불어 교실안으로 다시 들어왔습니다.
그리고 닐리 선생님께서 뭔가 slate에 적어줍니다.
애니는 바로 이게 Something to learn인 것을 알게 되고
이제 집에 간다고 하네요.
잭은 미안했던지 마지막으로 Jeb에게 다가가 이야기를 건내지만
Jeb은 들은척하지도 않네요.

하지만 멀리서 트위스터가 보이기 시작합니다.
덕아웃에 있는 4명은 이 사실을 전혀 모를텐데 말이죠..
서둘러 애니는 잭을 설득하여 다시 덕아웃으로 가게 됩니다.
바람이 어찌나 세게 불던지 .. 바닥에 내동댕이 쳐졌습니다.
하지만 다시 일어나 덕아웃으로 향했으나..
꼼짝하지 않는 문 그리고 바람소리 때문에.. 문을 두두리는 소리가 전해지지 않는 절박한 상황!
갑자기 경첩이 떨어져 나가더니
교실안은 아수라장이 됩니다.
재빨리 애니가 지하실로 숨자고 얘기하지만 선생님 조차 지하실 존재여부를 모르고 있었네요.
카페트를 드러내고 지하로 연결된 문을 찾자 잭과 애니는 힘써보지만 열리지 않습니다.
이 때 Jeb이 나서서 도와주게 되고, 모두 안전하게 대피하게 됩니다.
마치 위에는 기차가 지나가듯이 큰 소리를 내며 모든것을 날려버리고 있었네요.
이제 잭과 젭은 사이가 좋아질까요? ^^;

6명은 모두 밖으로 나왔습니다.
트위스터가 지나간 자리엔 아~~~~무 것도 남아있지 않았습니다.
심지어 지하실을 덮어두었던 양탄자(rug) 조차말이죠.
저 멀리 수평선끝에 트위스터가 지나가고 있는 것이 보이다가 결국 눈에서 사라집니다.
닐리선생님은 이 모습이 마치 들판에 곡식을 심어놓은 자리에 메뚜기떼가 지나가면서
모두 사라진 흔적과 같다고 합니다.
그리고 점토판에 써있던 이 한마디를 하네요 ^^

잭과 애니가 떠나려는 순간 젭이 기다리라고 소리 칩니다.
잭은 아직 젭이 두려웠지만 젭은 왜 다시 돌아왔는지 물어보게 됩니다.
잭과 애니는 지하 대피소를 알려주기 위해 되돌아 왔다고 합니다.
잭은 이미 책에서 봤으니 알고 있었던 거죠 ^^
젭은 가난해서 부모님께서 학교에 보낼 수 없다고 합니다.
하지만 늦었을 때가 가장 빠른 법...
그리고 그들은 친구가 되었습니다.
다시 매트하를 통해 집으로 돌아온 잭과 애니..
애니는 If at first you don't succeed, try, try again! 이 모습이..
잭과 젭이 다시 친구가 될 수 있었다는 것을 일깨워줍니다.
실패는 성공의 어머니니깐요 ^^
